29th Dec

Message frorm David in the mini
Just crossed the tropic of Cancer, long days driving 500K thro barren dessert
but good roads. The big 4X4 had a 70mph blowout,gave Jeff a scare,but after
a change of tyre and underwear,we were underway. We have absorbed another
car into the group which was left behind. We are heading for the border
tonight into Mauritania and should camp withinfive miles of it.Last mobile
phone signal for three days as far as I know-wish us luck!

Hmm a 4x4 and a blowout at 70mph.. yep that will do it to your underwear! Good thing you were all on a pretty isolated road too. Another crew added should be interesting also..

Yep Mauritania will be an interesting journey being one of the poorest countries in Africa..but apparently has spectacular scenery and a train that is 3kms long that runs from the hinterland to the coast carrying iron.

Pat ... there are also spinner dolphins off the coast.. they are crazy jumpers and spin as they jump really high... saw them in The Canaries .. amazing stuff! Get some binoculars out and search the water/horizon. The pods are becoming more prolific these days thankfully. There aren't any life threatening sharks either, they are all in South Africa, so go for a dip in the ocean if you get a chance .. just to say you have done it! Might even be a few dolphins around to swim with you.. you never know..

Please be careful in Mauritania ... delicate *balance of life* there ... and at the moment I don't know anyone doing any community development work there to help out if you need. They are all in Afghanistan or South Africa!

The locals speak Arabic also.. or Mandingo ... yes you are heading into Roots territory also..the Ghambia is where it all started ..

It is blue skies and windy back here in the UK .. almost New Year but not quite.. very quiet in my neck of the woods too.. for some strange reason???

Anyhow keep having fun ... stay safe and happy.

Oh have you eaten camel yet..?? Quite a tasty treat don't you think? Strong meat but good. Curried goat is nice too..

Have a great New Year celebration too!

Later dudes..
Giselle
